Commissioned Writers

One of our missions here at Fio is to actively build the slate of new work written by Global Majority artists in Wales, by commissioning at least two new plays every year, plus continued investment for the other commissions on our slate in any given year.

2023-24

Lauren Morais and

Nia Gandhi

Lauren and Nia are a new writing team, currently writing a bilingual (Welsh and English) play about two friends in Wales, who come together to write lesbian vampire fan fiction, exploring themes of friendship, gay panic and identity through comedy - with a touch of vampire-toothed terror.

Danielle Fahiya

Danielle is currently developing a play set in the roaring 1920s of Tiger Bay. The play tells the story of May Allegra Abdullah, a woman who after many years of believing it was too late to fulfil her dreams, finally steps into her light.

When danger and dreams lie on every corner, what must May do to protect her hopes for the future and escape the past that is threatening to derail her?

Safyan Iqbal

Fio’s Creative Associate Safyan Iqbal is writing his first play telling his story as a deaf, South Asian, Muslim man growing up in Cardiff. The piece will incorporate digital animation and creative captions.
