for our season of PROVOCATIONS at Chapter Arts Centre.
From King Lear family therapy to the colonisation of Mars,
chemical submission, the end of the world and petrol stations,
we’ve given 6 theatre makers a provocation to wrestle with
and a week in the room with actors.
This is the result.
There will be three 30 min presentations
per night and after each we’ll give you
food and drinks in exchange of your thoughts.
We promise some ideas wrestling, serious comedy
and absurd tragedy. And some unknown.
After Cordelia
Spoken word artist Samatar Elmi revisits King Lear as a family therapy session led by Cordelia exposing the wounds of patriarchy and misogyny and what we have come to accept.
Medusa
Actor and writer Nia Gandhi juxtaposes Greek tragedy, the Greek chorus and the head of Medusa found in a Tesco bag. Set in a petrol station, this is a punk post apocalyptic feminist tragedy between Cumbrian roundabout and the A4 road to Cardiff.
Magama Does Sci-Fi - MDSF
Traditional Zimbabwean storyteller Magama inspired by Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles to investigate the colonisation of Mars.
Gaslight
Known fighting director Kevin McCurdy investigates Patrick Hamilton’s classic play, Gaslight - the text that originates the expression ‘Gaslighting’, and the rife normalisation of chemical submission.
M(other)hood
A Young Somali writer from Butetown talking about a taboo subject of fertility in young women that feels like a curse.
Saint Khadija
With great Moroccan music and arguments over the lack of breakfast on the table, performer and maker Rahim El Habachi writes about growing up with a divorced mother who goes clubbing a lot in Morocco. Directed by the brilliant facilitator Nerida.
